City On Fire: A Novel of Pompeii
By Tracy L. Higley
Ariella is a young Jewish slave-girl, who is angry at God, and no longer trusts in Him because she believes he let her suffer through the pain of losing her beloved family, and allowed her to be sold to her terribly cruel master in Rome. She manages to escape her evil master and disguise herself as a young man, and join the gladiator troupe. She ends up in Pompeii, Rome's capital city, to fight for her freedom, and her life.
Cato is a politician who fled to Pompeii to get away from his past failures in Rome, and to try to start a new life, though he discovers that Pompeii is just as dangerous and troubled as Rome was. Cato believes the citizens deserve justice from the horrible man that controls the city, and fights for their rights with the help of his allies, a group of Christians. This is a great fiction book that I would recommend for adults and maybe teens, depending on how mature you are.
